Definition
Like terms have exactly the same variables raised to exactly the same powers. 3x and 5x are like terms, but 3x and 3x squared are not, and neither are 3x and 7.
The test
Two terms are alike when their variable parts match exactly. The coefficients can be anything.
| Terms | Alike? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| and | yes | both are “some number of ” |
| and | no | different powers |
| and | no | different variables |
| and | no | one has a variable, one does not |
| and | yes | identical variable part |
Combining them
Add or subtract the coefficients and keep the variable part unchanged:
It works because means four of something and means two of the same something. Removing two leaves two.
Why unlike terms cannot combine
cannot become . You do not know what is, so “two of something” plus “twelve” has no single simpler form — it is like adding two apples to twelve, which is not fourteen apples. Leaving an expression as is a finished answer, not an unfinished one.
