Angle Relationships: Complementary, Supplementary and Vertical Angles

Quick answer

Complementary angles add to 90 degrees and supplementary angles add to 180. When two lines cross, the angles opposite each other are vertical and always equal, while angles side by side are adjacent and add to 180 on a straight line. Each relationship turns a missing angle into a one-step equation.

What you'll learn

  • Identify complementary, supplementary, vertical and adjacent angles
  • Explain why vertical angles are equal
  • Find a missing angle by writing and solving an equation

Two angles that add to a fixed total

RelationshipThey add toPicture
complementary90°90°a square corner
supplementary180°180°a straight line
complementary:  a+b=90°supplementary:  a+b=180°\text{complementary}: \; a + b = 90° \qquad \text{supplementary}: \; a + b = 180°

If two angles are complementary and one is 35°35°:

35°+b=90°⇒b=55°35° + b = 90° \quad\Rightarrow\quad b = 55°

C for corner and 9090, S for straight and 180180. The alphabet gives the same order: complementary before supplementary, 9090 before 180180.

Adjacent angles on a straight line

Adjacent angles sit side by side, sharing a vertex and one arm. When two adjacent angles form a straight line, they are supplementary:

a+b=180°a + b = 180°

That is what “a straight angle is 180°180°” means in practice, and it is the fact almost every angle problem eventually leans on.

Vertical angles are equal

When two straight lines cross, four angles appear. The pairs opposite each other are vertical angles, and they are always equal.

Label them aa, bb, cc, dd going round:

PairRelationship
aa and ccvertical — equal
bb and ddvertical — equal
aa and bbadjacent — supplementary
bb and ccadjacent — supplementary

Why vertical angles have to be equal

This one has a short proof, and it is worth following rather than accepting.

aa and bb sit together on a straight line:

a+b=180°a + b = 180°

bb and cc also sit together on a straight line:

b+c=180°b + c = 180°

Two quantities that both equal 180°180° must equal each other:

a+b=b+ca + b = b + c

Subtract bb from both sides:

a=ca = c

Nothing about the particular angles was used, so it holds for every pair of crossing lines. That is what makes it a theorem rather than something to check each time — and it means one measured angle at a crossing gives you all four.

Finding a missing angle

Each relationship turns the picture into an equation, and from there it is ordinary solving.

Two supplementary angles, one 130°130°:

130+x=180⇒x=50°130 + x = 180 \quad\Rightarrow\quad x = 50°

An angle and its complement, where the second is twice the first:

x+2x=90⇒3x=90⇒x=30°x + 2x = 90 \quad\Rightarrow\quad 3x = 90 \quad\Rightarrow\quad x = 30°

So the angles are 30°30° and 60°60°.

Check the answer against the relationship. 30+60=9030 + 60 = 90, so the pair really is complementary. That check catches most slips in one line.

Angles round a point

A full turn is 360°360°, so angles meeting at a point add to that:

a+b+c+d=360°a + b + c + d = 360°

At a crossing of two lines this agrees with everything above: two pairs of supplementary angles give 180+180=360180 + 180 = 360.

    Answer

    18°18° and 72°72°

    Full solution

    x+4x=90x + 4x = 90 gives 5x=905x = 90, so x=18x = 18 and 4x=724x = 72.

    Checking: 18+72=9018 + 72 = 90. ✓

  8. Two supplementary angles are equal. Find each.

    Answer

    90°90° each

    Full solution

    x+x=180x + x = 180 gives 2x=1802x = 180, so x=90x = 90.

  9. Two supplementary angles are 2x−102x - 10 and x+40x + 40. Find both.

    Hint

Add them and set the total to 180180.

    90°90° and 90°90°

    Full solution

    (2x−10)+(x+40)=180(2x - 10) + (x + 40) = 180 gives 3x+30=1803x + 30 = 180, so 3x=1503x = 150 and x=50x = 50.

    Then 2(50)−10=902(50) - 10 = 90 and 50+40=9050 + 40 = 90.

    Checking: 90+90=18090 + 90 = 180. ✓

  10. Told that two angles are complementary and one is 110°110°, Ines answers that the other is −20°-20°. What has gone wrong?

    Hint

Can a complementary angle be 110°110° at all?

    Answer

The question is impossible. A complementary pair cannot contain an angle above 90°90°.

    Full solution

Her arithmetic is right: 90−110=−2090 - 110 = -20. The problem is the question.

Complementary angles add to 90°90°, and both must be positive, so neither can exceed 90°90°. An angle of 110°110° has no complement.

The negative answer is the signal. An angle of −20°-20° is not a thing you can draw, so a negative result here means the setup was faulty rather than the sum.

If the angles were meant to be supplementary, 180−110=70°180 - 110 = 70° works and is very likely the intended question.

Frequently asked questions

What are complementary angles?

Two angles that add to 90 degrees. If one is 35, the other is 55.

What are supplementary angles?

Two angles that add to 180 degrees. Angles on a straight line are supplementary.

What are vertical angles?

The angles opposite each other when two lines cross. They are always equal.

How do I remember which is which?

Complementary comes before supplementary alphabetically, and 90 comes before 180. C for corner, S for straight also works.

Why are vertical angles always equal?

Because each shares a straight line with the same neighboring angle. If a + b = 180 and b + c = 180, then a and c must be equal.
