Constant of proportionality

Also written: constant of proportionality k · direct variation constant

Definition

The fixed multiplier k in a proportional relationship y = kx. It equals y divided by x, gives the same value for every pair, and is the unit rate of the situation.

For apples at 22 dollars each, y=2xy = 2x and k=2k = 2.

Finding it from a table

Divide yy by xx in every row. Proportional means they all agree.

One row is never enough — any single pair produces some quotient. What matters is that they match, which is the test set out in proportional relationships.

What k looks like on a graph

The graph of y=kxy = kx is a straight line through the origin, and kk is how steeply it rises. The point (1,k)(1, k) puts the constant on the picture directly: the height of the line above x=1x = 1 is kk.

The line passes through (0,0)(0, 0) because substituting x=0x = 0 gives y=0y = 0 whatever kk is. That is the test that separates y=kxy = kx from the general slope-intercept form y=mx+by = mx + b — a proportional relationship is the case where b=0b = 0, with no starting amount.
