How to Find a Percent of a Number
Quick answer
To find a percent of a number, turn the percent into a decimal and multiply. 30% of 80 is 0.3 times 80, which is 24. The word "of" means multiply. For mental arithmetic, build the answer out of 10% and 1%, which you can find by moving the decimal point one or two places left.
What you'll learn
- Find a percent of a number by converting to a decimal and multiplying
- Use benchmark percents to work one out mentally
- Judge whether an answer is a sensible size before trusting it
“Of” means multiply
This is the whole method in one word.
You met “of” meaning multiply back in multiplying fractions, and it means exactly the same thing here. A percent is a fraction, and taking a part of an amount is multiplication.
Three of the ten parts are shaded. If the whole bar is worth , each part is worth , and three of them are .
The method
- Write the percent as a decimal — divide by .
- Multiply by the number.
- Check the answer is a sensible size.
Step 3 is not optional filler. Under the answer must be smaller than the number you started with, and that single check catches nearly every misplaced decimal point.
Doing it in your head
Two percents can be found directly in one move, and almost everything else is built from them.
| Percent | How to get it | Example on |
|---|---|---|
| move the point one place left | ||
| move the point two places left | ||
| half of | ||
| double | ||
| halve the number | ||
This is the arithmetic behind every tip left in a restaurant and every sale sign read at a glance, and it needs no calculator.
Why swapping is allowed
of looks unpleasant. of is , instantly.
They are the same problem, because multiplication does not care about order:
So when one arrangement is awkward, turn it around. Nothing is lost.

Should the answer be bigger or smaller than ?
Answer
She multiplied by instead of . The answer is .
Full solution
is less than , so the answer has to be smaller than . An answer of fails that check before any arithmetic is rechecked.
Correctly: . Her is of , which is what would give — the decimal point moved one place too few.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a percent of a number?
Turn the percent into a decimal and multiply. For 30% of 80, use 0.3 times 80, which gives 24. The word of always means multiply.
How do I work out 15% in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, halve that to get 5%, then add the two. For 60, that is 6 plus 3, which is 9.
Is 20% of 50 the same as 50% of 20?
Yes, and both are 10. Multiplication can be done in either order, so the percent and the number can swap. Sometimes one order is far easier to do in your head.
Why is my answer bigger than the number I started with?
That is correct if the percent is above 100. Below 100% the answer must be smaller, so an answer that grew from a percent under 100 means the decimal point went the wrong way.
Do I have to use a decimal?
No. A fraction works whenever the percent has a simple one, and is often faster. 25% of 60 is a quarter of 60, which is 15, with no multiplication of decimals at all.
