Counting and Skip-Counting to 1,000
Quick answer
Counting to 1,000 repeats the pattern of counting to 100, with the hundreds digit going up each time the tens and ones roll over: 198, 199, 200. Skip- counting by 5s, 10s and 100s can start anywhere, such as 240, 250, 260. Adding 10 raises the tens digit by one and adding 100 raises the hundreds digit by one, so they can be done in your head. When the tens digit is 9, ten more tens make a new hundred: 395 + 10 = 405.
What you'll learn
- Count within 1,000
- Skip-count by 5s, 10s and 100s from any number
- Add or subtract 10 or 100 mentally
Count to 1,000
Counting past works the way counting to did. The ones go up to , then the tens go up.
After , the tens and ones roll back to and the hundreds go up by one: . At the very end, is followed by , one thousand.
Skip-count by 5s, 10s and 100s
To skip-count, add the same number each time.

Ten more and a hundred more
Adding adds one ten. So the tens digit goes up by one: .
Adding adds one hundred. So the hundreds digit goes up by one: .
Taking away works the same way, with the digit going down: and .
Why only one digit changes
is hundreds, tens and ones. Adding puts one more ten with the tens. The hundreds and ones have nothing added, so they stay as they are.
The one time more changes is when the tens digit is . Then one more ten makes ten tens, and ten tens is a new hundred. Ten more than is : the tens roll back to and the hundreds go from to .

The tens and ones stay the same: .
Frequently asked questions
What comes after 199?
200. The ones and tens roll back to 0 and the hundreds go up by one.
How do I skip-count by 10s from 240?
Add a ten each time: 250, 260, 270. Only the tens digit changes, until it rolls over from 9.
What is 100 more than 467?
567. Adding a hundred raises the hundreds digit by one; the tens and ones stay the same.
What is 10 more than 395?
405. The tens go from 9 to 10, and ten tens make a new hundred, so the hundreds go from 3 to 4 and the tens become 0.
Can I skip-count from any number?
Yes. From 35 by 5s: 40, 45, 50. From 130 by 100s: 230, 330, 430.
