Odd and Even Numbers

Quick answer

A number is even when its objects can all be put in pairs with none left over, and odd when one is always left without a partner. Counting by 2s from 2 lands on the even numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and on. Every even number is a double — the sum of two equal numbers, as 12 = 6 + 6 — and no odd number is. For bigger numbers, the ones digit decides, because every ten pairs up with nothing left over.

What you'll learn

  • Decide whether a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even by pairing or counting by 2s
  • Write an even number as the sum of two equal numbers
  • Explain why the ones digit decides odd or even

Pair them up

Here are 88 socks, put in pairs.

Eight in pairs Eight dots in two rows of four. Every dot on top has a partner below it.
Eight in pairs

Every sock has a partner. None is left over. So 88 is even.

Now try 77.

Seven in pairs Seven dots: four on top and three below. The last dot on top has no partner.
Seven in pairs

Three pairs, and one sock is left over. So 77 is odd.

Count by 2s

Count by 22s: 22, 44, 66, 88, 1010, 1212, 1414, 1616, 1818, 2020. These are the even numbers.

The numbers you skip are the odd numbers: 11, 33, 55, 77, 99, 1111, 1313, 1515, 1717, 1919.

Even and odd take turns: even, odd, even, odd, all the way up.

Why even numbers are doubles

Take the pairs apart. Put one sock from each pair on the left and the other on the right. Both sides get the same number.

So an even number is always a number plus itself: a double.

8=4+412=6+618=9+98 = 4 + 4 \qquad 12 = 6 + 6 \qquad 18 = 9 + 9

An odd number can not be split that way. For 77, one sock is always left over: 7=3+3+17 = 3 + 3 + 1.

Bigger numbers

A ten is 55 pairs, with none left over. So the tens in a number always pair up.

That means only the ones digit decides. If it is 00, 22, 44, 66 or 88, the number is even. If it is 11, 33, 55, 77 or 99, the number is odd.

1616 is even, because 66 is even. 1313 is odd, because 33 is odd.

Practice problems

  1. Is 66 odd or even?

    Answer

    Even

    Full solution

    66 makes 33 pairs with none left over. Also, 6=3+36 = 3 + 3.

  2. Is 1111 odd or even?

    Answer

    Odd

    Full solution

1111 makes 55 pairs with 11 left over. Its ones digit, 11, is odd.

  3. Odd or even?

Odd or even? Thirteen dots: seven on top and six below. One dot on top has no partner.
    Odd or even?
    Answer

    Odd

    Full solution

There are 66 pairs and 11 dot left over. That is 1313, an odd number.

  4. Write 1010 as the sum of two equal numbers.

    Answer

    10=5+510 = 5 + 5

    Full solution

    55 plus itself is 1010.

  5. Write 1616 as the sum of two equal numbers.

    Answer

    16=8+816 = 8 + 8

    Full solution

    8+8=168 + 8 = 16. Since 1616 is a double, it is even.

  6. What is the next even number after 1414?

    Answer

    1616

    Full solution

Count by 22s from 1414: the next number is 1616. (1515 is odd.)

  7. List the odd numbers between 1010 and 2020.

    Answer

    1111, 1313, 1515, 1717, 1919

    Full solution

    These end in 11, 33, 55, 77 and 99, the odd digits.

  8. There are 2020 kids. Can they all line up in pairs?

    Answer

    Yes

    Full solution

    2020 is even: 10+10=2010 + 10 = 20. That makes 1010 pairs with nobody left over.

  9. Is 00 odd or even?

    Answer

    Even

    Full solution

    With 00 objects, nothing is left over. And 0=0+00 = 0 + 0 is a double.

  10. Zoe says 1818 is odd because 11 is odd. What went wrong?

    Hint

Which digit decides odd or even?

    Answer

The ones digit decides. It is 88, so 1818 is even.

    Full solution

The 11 in 1818 stands for one ten, which is 55 pairs with none left over.

    The 88 ones make 44 more pairs. So 1818 is even: 18=9+918 = 9 + 9.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a number is even?

Put the objects in pairs. If none is left over, the number is even. Or check the ones digit: 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 means even.

What are the odd numbers up to 20?

1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19.

Why is every even number a double?

Pairs can be split one to each side. Each side gets the same amount, so the number is that amount plus itself: 12 = 6 + 6.

Is 0 even?

Yes. Zero objects leave nothing over when paired, and 0 = 0 + 0.

Why does only the ones digit matter?

Every ten is 5 pairs with none left over. So the tens never change whether a number is odd or even; only the ones can.
