Scale Drawings and Maps

Quick answer

A scale drawing represents something at a different size while keeping every proportion. The scale tells you how drawing lengths relate to real ones, so 1 cm : 50 km turns any measured distance into an actual one with a single proportion. Lengths scale by the factor k, and areas scale by k², because an area is built from two lengths.

What you'll learn

  • Convert between a scale drawing and actual measurements
  • Find the scale factor between two similar figures
  • Explain why area scales by the square of the length factor

What a scale says

A scale drawing shows something at a different size while keeping every proportion — so it is similar to the original rather than merely a picture of it.

The scale states the relationship:

1 cm:50 km1 \text{ cm} : 50 \text{ km}

Every centimeter on the drawing stands for 5050 kilometers in reality.

ScaleRead as
11 cm : 5050 kmone centimeter represents fifty kilometers
11 : 200200the real thing is 200200 times the drawing
11 inch : 44 feetone inch represents four feet

A scale written with no units, like 1:2001:200, works in any unit. One centimeter on the plan is 200200 centimeters in reality; one inch is 200200 inches. That is what makes unitless scales convenient.

Drawing to actual, and back

Both directions are one proportion.

A map has a scale of 11 cm : 5050 km. Two towns are 77 cm apart. How far apart are they really?

150=7x⇒x=350 km\frac{1}{50} = \frac{7}{x} \quad\Rightarrow\quad x = 350 \text{ km}

The same map. Two cities are 375375 km apart. How far apart on the map?

150=d375⇒50d=375⇒d=7.5 cm\frac{1}{50} = \frac{d}{375} \quad\Rightarrow\quad 50d = 375 \quad\Rightarrow\quad d = 7.5 \text{ cm}

Going to actual multiplies; coming back divides. A sense check settles which you need: the real distance is always the larger number on a map.

Finding the scale factor

Given a drawing length and its actual length, the factor is their quotient:

k=actualdrawingk = \frac{\text{actual}}{\text{drawing}}

A model car is 1212 cm long and the real car is 4.84.8 m.

Convert to one unit first — 4.84.8 m is 480480 cm:

k=48012=40k = \frac{480}{12} = 40

The scale is 1:401:40.

Converting units first is not optional. Dividing 4.84.8 by 1212 gives 0.40.4, which is not a scale factor for anything.

Why area scales by k²

This is the part that catches people out, and it is worth understanding rather than memorizing.

A floor plan at 1:1001:100. A room measures 44 cm by 33 cm on the plan.

PlanActual
length44 cm400400 cm
width33 cm300300 cm
area1212 cm²120,000120{,}000 cm²

The lengths went up by 100100. The area went up by:

120,00012=10,000=1002\frac{120{,}000}{12} = 10{,}000 = 100^2

An area is a length times a length. Both have been multiplied by kk, so the product is multiplied by kk twice:

area factor=k×k=k2\text{area factor} = k \times k = k^2

The same argument gives k3k^3 for volume, since a volume is three lengths multiplied.

So doubling every length of a model quadruples the material needed to cover it and multiplies its capacity by eight.

Practice problems

  1. Scale 11 cm : 1010 m. A line is 77 cm. Find the actual length.

    Answer

    7070 m

    Full solution

    7×10=707 \times 10 = 70.

  2. Same scale. Something is 250250 m long. How long on the drawing?

    Answer

    2525 cm

    Full solution

    250÷10=25250 \div 10 = 25.

  3. A map has scale 11 cm : 55 km. Two places are 88 cm apart. How far in reality?

    Answer

    4040 km

    Full solution

    8×5=408 \times 5 = 40.

  4. A model is 1:201:20. A part is 44 cm on the model. Find the real length.

    Answer

    8080 cm

    Full solution

    4×20=804 \times 20 = 80.

  5. What does a scale of 1:5001:500 mean?

    Answer

The real thing is 500500 times the drawing.

    Full solution

The scale has no units, so it holds in whatever unit you measure with.

  6. A map has scale 11 cm : 2525 km. Two towns are 175175 km apart. How far on the map?

    Answer

    77 cm

    Full solution

    175÷25=7175 \div 25 = 7.

  7. A drawing of a 33 m wall measures 1212 cm. Find the scale.

    Hint

    Convert to one unit first.

    Answer

    1:251:25

    Full solution

    33 m is 300300 cm, so k=300÷12=25k = 300 \div 12 = 25.

  8. A room is 66 cm by 55 cm on a 1:1001:100 plan. Find its actual area in square meters.

    Answer

    3030 m²

    Full solution

Actual lengths are 600600 cm by 500500 cm, which is 66 m by 55 m.

    6×5=306 \times 5 = 30 m².

  9. A shape on a 1:101:10 drawing has area 77 cm². Find its actual area.

    Answer

    700700 cm²

    Full solution

    Areas scale by k2=100k^2 = 100, so 7×100=7007 \times 100 = 700 cm².

  10. On a 1:501:50 plan a room has area 66 cm². Tom says the actual area is 300300 cm². Find his error.

    Hint

How many lengths make an area?

    Answer

He scaled by kk instead of k2k^2. The actual area is 15,00015{,}000 cm².

    Full solution

An area is two lengths multiplied, and the scale enlarges both of them. So the area factor is 50×50=250050 \times 50 = 2500:

    6×2500=15,0006 \times 2500 = 15{,}000 cm², which is 1.51.5 m².

Checking with actual dimensions confirms it. If the room were 33 cm by 22 cm on the plan, it is really 150150 cm by 100100 cm, giving 15,00015{,}000 cm².

His 300300 cm² is a square about 1717 cm on a side — smaller than a sheet of paper, and not a room.

Frequently asked questions

What is a scale drawing?

A drawing of something at a different size with every proportion kept. Maps, floor plans and model cars are all scale drawings.

How do I read a scale like 1 cm : 50 km?

Every centimeter on the drawing stands for 50 km in reality. Measure the drawing, then multiply by 50.

How do I go from actual back to drawing?

Divide instead of multiplying. If 1 cm stands for 50 km, then 375 km is 375 ÷ 50 = 7.5 cm.

What does a scale of 1:200 mean?

The real thing is 200 times the drawing, in whatever unit you like, because a ratio with no units works in all of them.

If lengths double, what happens to area?

It quadruples. Area comes from two lengths multiplied, so both have doubled and 2 × 2 = 4.
