Telling Time: Hours, Half Hours and Minutes
Quick answer
An analog clock has two hands. The short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes. At 3:00 the long hand points at 12; at 3:30 it points at 6, and the short hand sits halfway between 3 and 4, because it moves all through the hour. Each number on the face is 5 minutes for the long hand, so minutes are read by counting by fives. A.m. is the time from midnight to noon, and p.m. from noon to midnight.
What you'll learn
- Tell and write time to the hour and half hour on analog and digital clocks
- Tell and write time to the nearest five minutes
- Use a.m. and p.m.
Two hands
A clock has two hands. The short hand shows the hour. The long hand shows the minutes.
When the long hand points at , the time is right on the hour. Here the short hand points at . It is three o’clock, written .
Half past the hour
Now the long hand has gone halfway around, to the . Half an hour has passed. That is minutes.
It is half past three, written .
Why the short hand is between two numbers
The short hand does not jump from to . It moves slowly all through the hour.
At it is on the . By it gets to the . So at , halfway through the hour, it is halfway between the and the .
The hour is the number the short hand has passed. At that is still .
Minutes by fives
The long hand goes around once in minutes. Each number it passes is more minutes.
To read the minutes, count by fives from the to the long hand: , , , , . The short hand has passed the .
It is .
a.m. and p.m.
The hour hand goes around the clock twice each day. So happens twice: once in the morning and once at night.
- a.m. means from midnight to noon: the night and the morning.
- p.m. means from noon to midnight: the afternoon and the evening.
You might wake up at a.m. and eat dinner at p.m.

Frequently asked questions
Which hand is the hour hand?
The short hand. The long hand shows the minutes.
Where are the hands at half past three?
The long hand points at the 6, and the short hand points halfway between the 3 and the 4. The time is 3:30.
How do I read the minutes?
Count by fives from the 12 to the number the long hand points at. At the 5, that is 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 minutes.
What do a.m. and p.m. mean?
