Early Math · Grade 1
Counting to 120
Quick answer
Counting past 100 follows the same pattern as counting from 1: the last digit runs from 0 to 9, then the next ten starts. So 100, 101, 102 go on to 109, then 110, and on to 119, then 120. Counting can start at any number, going up or back. A big group of objects is counted fastest in tens: ten, twenty, thirty, and so on, then the ones left over.
What you'll learn
- Count to 120 starting at any number
- Read and write the numbers from 100 to 120
- Count a group of objects by tens and ones and write the number
Count past 100
You can count to . The numbers keep going after that.
Read as one hundred one. Read as one hundred ten. At the end, is one hundred twenty.
Here are the numbers from to , ten in each row:
Why the pattern repeats
Look at the last digit as you count: , , , up to , then . Then it starts over.
Each time the last digit comes back to , a new ten starts. goes to . goes to . And goes to .
Past , you count the same way you did from to . You only put “one hundred” in front.
Start anywhere
You do not have to start at . Start at any number and count on.
From : , , , , .
You can count back, too. From : , , , , .
Count big groups by tens
Here are some blocks. Each tall block is a ten. Each small block is a one.
Count the tens: , , , , , , , , , , . Then count on the ones: , , , .
There are blocks.
