Counting to 100 by Ones and by Tens
Quick answer
Counting means saying the numbers in the same order every time. Kindergarten children learn to count to 100 by ones and by tens, to start counting from any number instead of from 1, and to write the numbers from 0 to 20. Counting by tens works because each ten is ten ones, so it lands on the same totals in fewer steps.
What you'll learn
- Count to 100 by ones and by tens
- Count forward from any number, not only from 1
- Write the numbers from 0 to 20
Count by ones
To count, say the numbers in the same order each time.
Point to one dot for each number you say.
There are dots. Now keep going. The next ones are , , , and on.
Count by tens
A ten-frame holds dots. When it is full, it shows a ten.
Count full frames by tens. Say , , , , . Then say , , , , .
That is ten tens. Ten tens make .
Why counting by tens works
Each full frame has dots in it. So each ten you say skips ahead by in one step.
Say you count full frames by ones. You get to . Now count them by tens: , , . You land on once more.
The dots do not change. Only the way you count them does. Tens get you to the same place, but with far fewer steps.
Start at any number
You do not have to start at . You can start from the number you have.
Say you have blocks. Then you get more. Do not start at . Start at and count on: , , . Now you have blocks.
This is called counting on.
Write the numbers
Here are the numbers from to :
The number means none. A plate with no grapes on it has grapes.

Full solution
The tens stay at . The ones go , , .
-
Sam counts: , , , , . What went wrong?
Hint
What happens to the tens after a ?
Answer
After comes , not .
Full solution
At the ones are at . The next step makes a new ten.
So tens turns to tens, and the ones go back to . The next number is .
Sam went back to , which he had already passed.
Frequently asked questions
What order do the numbers go in?
The same order every time: 1, 2, 3, and so on. After 9 comes 10, after 19 comes 20, and after 99 comes 100.
What does counting by tens mean?
Saying every tenth number: 10, 20, 30, up to 100. It is faster than counting by ones and reaches the same numbers.
What is counting on?
Starting from a number other than 1. To count on from 7, say 8, 9, 10 without starting over.
What does 0 mean?
None. A plate with no apples on it has 0 apples.
What comes after 29?
30. The tens number goes up by one and the ones start again: 28, 29, 30, 31.
