Discounts, Sales Tax and Tips
Quick answer
A discount, a tax and a tip are all the same calculation wearing different clothes. Take 30% off by multiplying by 0.7. Add 8% tax by multiplying by 1.08. Leave a 20% tip by multiplying by 1.2. When a discount and a tax both apply, the order they are worked out in does not change the final total.

One calculation, three names
A discount, a sales tax and a tip look like three separate topics in a textbook. They are one calculation: apply a percent change to an amount of money.

Discounts: pay for what is left
” off” tells you what you do not pay. What matters is the rest.
A $80 coat at off:
The two-step route — find of , which is , then subtract — gives the same $56. The one-step version is faster and removes the chance of subtracting when you meant to add.
Tax and tips: keep everything, then add
Tax and tips run the other way. You still owe the whole amount, plus more.
The carries the original price and the carries the tax, which is why one multiplication does both jobs.
Tips without a calculator

On a $45 bill: is $4.50, so a tip is $9. A tip adds half of the to itself, giving $4.50 plus $2.25, which is $6.75.
Why the order does not matter
A shop takes off, then adds tax. Would doing it the other way round change your bill?
Identical, because both are multiplications and multiplication does not care about order. The combined multiplier is either way.
Shops still apply the discount first, but for a legal reason rather than a mathematical one: tax is charged on the amount you actually pay.
Why two discounts do not add
” off, then a further off” is not off.
You pay , so the true discount is . The second cut is taken from the already-reduced price, so it is worth less than the first.
This is the same reason a rise and an equal fall do not cancel — each percent is measured against a different amount.

Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a sale price?
Multiply by what is left after the discount. For 30% off, you pay 70%, so multiply the price by 0.7. That is one step instead of finding the discount and subtracting it.
How do I add sales tax?
Multiply by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. For 8% tax, multiply by 1.08. The 1 keeps the price and the 0.08 adds the tax.
Does it matter whether the discount or the tax goes first?
No. Both are multiplications, and multiplication can be done in any order, so the total comes out the same either way. Shops apply the discount first because tax is charged on what you actually pay.
What is the fastest way to work out a 20% tip?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it. On a 45 dollar bill, 10% is 4.50 and 20% is 9.
Two discounts of 25% — is that 50% off?
No. The second 25% comes off the already-reduced price, so the total is 43.75% off. Multiply the multipliers: 0.75 times 0.75 is 0.5625, meaning you pay 56.25%.
