Addition and Subtraction
- Addition and Subtraction Stories Within 20
First grade word problems: add to, take from, put together, take apart and compare within 20, with the unknown in any spot, plus stories that add three numbers.
- Addition and Subtraction Strategies Within 20
Add and subtract within 20 in your head: count on, turn a sum around, make a ten, use doubles, subtract through ten, and use a fact you know. Grades 1–2.
- Subtraction and Missing Numbers
First grade: subtract by finding a missing part, such as 10 − 8 as 8 + ? = 10, and find the missing number in any addition or subtraction sentence.
- The Equal Sign: True and False Number Sentences
First grade: the equal sign means 'is the same as.' Check whether number sentences like 7 = 8 − 1 and 4 + 1 = 5 + 2 are true or false, and fill in missing numbers.
Place Value
- Adding Tens and Ones Within 100
First grade: find 10 more or 10 less in your head, add and subtract tens, and add within 100 by adding tens to tens and ones to ones, making a new ten when needed.
- Counting to 120
First grade counting: count to 120 from any number, read and write the numbers past 100, and count a big group of objects by tens and ones.
- Tens and Ones: Place Value to 99
First grade place value: see a ten as ten ones, read a two-digit number as tens and ones, and compare two-digit numbers with the symbols >, = and <.
Measurement & Data
- Telling Time: Hours, Half Hours and Minutes
Tell and write time on analog and digital clocks: to the hour and half hour in first grade, to five minutes with a.m. and p.m. in second grade.
- Measuring Length with Units
First grade measurement: put three objects in order by length, compare two lengths using a third object, and measure with same-size units laid end to end.
Data and Graphs
- Sorting and Counting: Groups and Graphs
Sort objects into groups, count each group and put the groups in order, then read simple graphs to find the total and how many more or fewer. Grades K–1.
Geometry
- Building Shapes: Sides, Corners and Putting Shapes Together
Count the sides and corners of flat shapes, compare flat and solid shapes, build shapes with sticks and clay, and put small shapes together to make bigger ones.
- Equal Shares: Halves, Thirds and Fourths
Cut circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal shares, name them halves, thirds and fourths, and see why more shares means smaller shares. Grades 1–2.
- What Makes a Shape: Sides, Angles and Faces
Tell what names a shape, like being closed with three sides, from what does not, like color and size; then name quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
